Wessex Baroque was formed by Jane Norman and Jan Spencer in 2010.  Jane and Jan met and first made music together whilst studying at the Guildhall School of Music in London, more years ago than they care to remember, and have worked as freelance musicians with period groups such as The Sixteen, CM90 and Brecon Baroque ever since. Jan moved to Devon many years ago, combining running a smallholding with a busy career in music, and Jane moved to South Somerset with her husband and small dog in 2009 to balance her career as an itinerant musician with a relaxed pace of life in beautiful surroundings. That was the idea anyway...

Based on the Somerset/ Devon border, the group has worked with eminent musicians such as lutenist David Miller and soprano Lorna Anderson on programmes of music by Dowland, Lawes and Purcell, performing in a diverse range of venues including Arts Centres, village churches, a residential home for elderly people, a cider farm and an animal sanctuary.  Players with a connection to the South West are hand-picked to form a larger ensemble, and Wessex Baroque has enjoyed working with Crowthorne Choral Society under the baton of Simon Williamson on programmes of choral music by Haydn, Bach and Handel.

The group has a strong commitment to music education, and has led music workshops in schools in Ilminster, Buckland St Mary and Combe St Nicholas in Somerset on a wide range of topics including Vivaldiā€™s Four Seasons, folk music and the tropical rainforest!
